Jazz is the quintessential American art form. In addition to the music itself jazz represents a way of being and a way of seeing. It embodies freedom of expression, the questioning of dogma, the insistence and practice of joy, of emancipation, in some form. Every day. As poet Langston Hughes wrote, "Jazz is a heartbeat—its heartbeat is yours".
